Salvo Arena '00Dear Fellow Alumni:

I am Salvo Arena and I am delighted and honored to serve as President of the Harvard Law School Association which was founded in 1886 and has 38,000 members worldwide. All of you, all the alumni are part of the HLSA. We have the mission to foster networking and mutual support amongst the alumni, Harvard Law School, faculty, and students.

I would like to give you a brief update of the last two months which have been extraordinarily intense with outstanding accomplishments.

We have launched three new important Shared Interest Groups: the HLSA Entrepreneur's Network, the HLSA In-House Counsel Network and the HLSA Private Equity and Venture Capital Network. All of them represent unique opportunities to connect and build up powerful relationships among and with the alumni engaged in such professional fields. Several events have already been organized in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco with remarkable attendance and success. If you are interested in learning more about these new Shared Interest Groups, please sign up today.

We are in the process of revitalizing the Harvard Law School Association of South Florida and launching a new HLS Association in Turkey, where we expect vigorous activity by the local leadership. We are also glad to let you know that Glenn Ivey '86 has recently announced his candidacy for the U.S. Congress and therefore he is passing the torch of President of the HLSA of Washington, D.C. to Juanita Hernández '85, who will certainly continue to make the Washington, D.C. chapter very active and successful.

Alumni events organized by HLSA Clubs and Shared Interest Groups in the last two months include:

  • HLSA of Cincinnati - Luncheon Meeting with Cincinnati Mayor, John Cranley '99
  • HLSA of Northern CA - Panel Discussion on "Advising Disruptive Companies: Perspectives from In-House Counsel at Uber, Lyft, Airbnb and Lending Club"
  • HLSA of the United Kingdom - Joint Networking Event with the Harvard Business School Club of London
  • HLS Women's Alliance of New York - Private Concert with Renowned Concert Pianist, Navah Perlman
To see more events for 2015, visit the HLSA Events Calendar.

On May 14-17, 2015, in Paris, the Harvard Law School Association of Europe will celebrate its 50th anniversary. It will be a memorable event welcoming hundreds of alumni, our beloved Dean Martha Minow and two Professors from Harvard Law School. Social highlights of the weekend include, but are not limited to, a visit of the spectacular castle of Chantilly and a dinner on a boat floating on the river Seine. On Saturday evening, the gala dinner will be held at the Cercle de l'Union Interalliée, the exact birthplace of the HLSA of Europe. Registration for this milestone event has been extended through April 30. To register and for more details, please visit www.hlsae.net/reunions.

We have continued to work on our efforts to improve the tools to communicate with alumni. We have just established the HLSA Instagram Account (@hlsaalumni) which is in its nascent stages. If you are an Instagram user, please follow us and post your pictures to share with your classmates around the world. We are investing more time and resources to improve the content of our Facebook page. To that end, if you have a Facebook account, please "Like" the HLSA page if you haven't already. It would be helpful to have your feedback on your experience as a Facebook user. We also have an official Harvard Law School Alumni LinkedIn group for all alumni, students and HLS faculty. If you haven't joined yet, I encourage you to do so and stay connected with HLS and your classmates.

We were also very fortunate to have had Dean Minow speak with alumni at events hosted by the HLSA of Houston (January) and the HLSA of Orange County (March). We thank Dean Minow for her continuing enthusiasm, energy, and dedication to the Law School and to the alumni body.

We look forward to welcoming many alumni back to Cambridge April 24-26 for Spring Reunions (Classes of 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010) and the annual meeting of the Harvard Law School Association.

We encourage all alumni to stay connected and help us spread the word. Volunteering to help with the HLSA can be an enriching and rewarding experience and if you are interested in getting involved, or want to provide feedback on our activities, please email us at hlsa@law.harvard.edu.

I am privileged to serve as your President and I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you personally to HLSA events in Cambridge or elsewhere.

With warmest regards,

Salvo Arena Signature
