October 2015

Dear Fellow Alumni:

I am Salvo Arena and I am honored to serve as President of the Harvard Law School Association. The membership of the HLSA is made up from the more than 38,000 Harvard Law School Alumni worldwide. The HLSA is the nerve center of professional and intellectual engagement among HLS alumni and is the hub for sharing contributions, opinions, tackling issues and dreaming up initiatives.

I hope you will join me in reading about the interesting research on: "The Women and Men of Harvard Law School: Preliminary Results from the HLS Career Study" by David B. Wilkins '80, Lester Kissel Professor of Law, Director of the Center on the Legal Profession and Vice Dean for Global Initiatives on the Legal Profession. You can also watch the video presentation from the spring 2015 reunion weekend.

On October 23-25, 2015, Dean Martha Minow and I will be delighted to welcome the alumni from classes of 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980 and Emeritus Club to celebrate the Reunion Weekend in Cambridge which will be an exciting opportunity to hear from the Dean, see your fellow classmates, meet new friends, attend great panels and reconnect with HLS.

Your network is not just your class, but is a global network of all Harvard Law School alumni, past, present and future. Let's all of us be active, spread the word, and expand the network.

The HLSA is constantly active by supporting and sponsoring programming and events for alumni. In 2015, through the local Clubs and the Shared Interest Groups (SIGs), we have already organized more than 70 events, forums, receptions, conferences, and roundtables engaging over 3,000 alumni around the globe.

Highlights of alumni events organized by HLSA Clubs and Shared Interest Groups in the last two months include:

  • HLSA of Europe - Breakfast meeting held in conjunction with the annual conference of the International Bar Association (IBA). Professor David B. Wilkins '80 delivered remarks about "Disruptive Innovation".

  • HLSA of Michigan - Fall Networking Mixer

  • HLSA of Northern CA with the HBSA of Northern CA - Oakland Raiders Football Game with Private Insider Talk

  • HLS Women's Alliance of New York - Program on Shareholder Activism

  • HLSA of the United Kingdom with the Harvard Business School Club of London - Joint Alumni Happy Hour
With the abundance of HLSA activity taking place, I'd like to highlight a few upcoming events and encourage you to join fellow alumni in your area where possible:
  • October 21 - HLSA of Cincinnati
Luncheon Meeting with Carter Stewart '97, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio

Supporting more than 30 Local Clubs, in the US and around the world, and a growing number of Shared Interest Groups (SIGs), the HLSA serves as the umbrella organization overseeing and providing a means of connectivity amongst the geographic clubs. The HLSA SIGs provide alumni with a unique opportunity to connect around a common theme. If you are interested in learning more about our Shared Interest Groups or would like to be actively involved, please sign up today.

Please stay connected through the HLSA Instagram Account (@hlsaalumni), our Facebook page and the Harvard Law School Alumni LinkedIn group. If you haven't joined yet, I encourage you to do so and stay connected with HLS and your classmates. Volunteering to help with the HLSA can be an enriching and rewarding experience and if you are interested in getting involved, or want to provide feedback on our activities, please email us at hlsa@law.harvard.edu.

I am privileged to serve as your President and I hope to have the fortune to see the HLSA network expand around the world.

With warmest regards,
